Privacy policy

Who is responsible

boxom is operated by Techtone Kft., a limited company registered in Hungary. Registered seat: 2083 Solymár, Törökkút utca 23. Company number 13-09-198456. VAT number HU26673369.

For anything in this policy, including a request to see or delete your data, write to info@theboxom.com. A person reads it.

What boxom keeps

Your account. Your email address, your name if your sign-in provider gives us one, and an identifier that lets us recognise you next time.

Your household. Its name, who belongs to it, and the email addresses you invite.

What is on your shelves. The products, how much of each, the dates, where each one is kept, and, if you enter them, what you paid and which shop it came from. Each entry records who added it and when.

What happened to it. When something was opened, used up or thrown away, and by whom. This is what lets boxom warn you at the right moment rather than the printed moment.

Your lists and preferences. Shopping lists, your own categories, star ratings, and the language you dictate in.

A notification token, if you turn notifications on, so we can reach that one device.

Barcodes we could not identify, so we can add the missing product to the catalogue. These are recorded against a household, not against a person.

What boxom never keeps

No photographs. The camera reads the barcode on your phone. The image is not uploaded, not stored, and never leaves the device. There is no code in boxom that could send it.

No recordings. When you read a date aloud, boxom asks your device to recognise the speech without sending it anywhere, and on devices that can do this the audio never leaves your phone. Where your device cannot, the operating system handles the recognition under the terms of its own maker and returns text. Either way boxom receives words, never sound, and stores neither.

No advertising, no tracking, no sale. There is no advertising identifier, nothing that follows you to another app or site, and your data is not sold, rented or shared with anyone for their own purposes.

Where it is kept

In a PostgreSQL database in Frankfurt, Germany, served by an application also running in Frankfurt. Your data stays in the European Union in the ordinary course of running boxom.

Who else touches it

Neon stores the database, in Frankfurt. Render runs the application and the website, in Frankfurt. Stripe takes the payment if you subscribe, and gives us the fact that you paid rather than your card number, which we never see or hold. Google confirms who you are if you sign in with a Google account. Apple delivers push notifications, and on some devices performs speech recognition.

Each of these acts on our instructions and may not use your data for anything else.

Why we are allowed to hold it

Most of it because we cannot run the service you asked for without it, which the law calls performance of a contract. Notifications rest on your consent, which you can withdraw by turning them off. Keeping unidentified barcodes and guarding against abuse rest on our legitimate interest in a catalogue that works and a service that stays up.

How long

While you have an account. Delete your account and the inventory, history and lists go with it. Ask us to delete it and we will, without asking why.

Two things outlive that, and neither identifies you: an unidentified barcode, which is a number and nothing else, and the anonymous shelf-life figures that make everyone's warnings better.

Taking it with you

boxom hands you the whole inventory as a structured file whenever you want it, in a form you can read yourself or hand to an assistant such as Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini. You do not need to ask us, and you do not need to be leaving.

Your rights

You can ask to see what we hold, correct it, delete it, restrict what we do with it, take it elsewhere, or object to a particular use. Write to info@theboxom.com.

If we handle it badly you can complain to the Hungarian supervisory authority, the Nemzeti Adatvédelmi és Információszabadság Hatóság (1055 Budapest, Falk Miksa utca 9-11), or to the authority where you live.

Children

boxom is not made for or aimed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly hold their data. A household is an adult's account.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect rather than quietly changing the date at the top.
