Almost 400,000 products, and nearly all of what boxom knows about them, comes from Open Food Facts - a free, open database built by volunteers photographing packaging in shops across Europe. Without it boxom would not exist.
The data is used under the Open Database Licence (ODbL) version 1.0. That licence lets anyone use, change and build on the database, and asks that the source is credited and that improvements to the database itself are shared back on the same terms.
Product photographs were taken by Open Food Facts contributors and are used under Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike. We serve them from our own machines rather than from theirs, so that a shelf of thirty items is thirty requests to us and none to a charity's servers.
How long things last once opened is not in Open Food Facts. Those figures are ours: a starting set from published food safety guidance, corrected over time by what households actually record. They are guidance, not a guarantee - see the terms.
Where we have corrected a product, or grouped it differently, that correction is ours and we offer it back to Open Food Facts.
If a product in boxom is wrong, tell us at info@theboxom.com and we will fix it for everyone. If you would rather fix it at the source, Open Food Facts will take your correction directly, and every app built on it improves at once.
